Based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Dr. Sa'ed Atshan is Associate Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies and Anthropology at Swarthmore College. During his career as a sociocultural anthropologist, he has focused his work mainly on conflict studies, the Middle East and North Africa region, and LGBTQ+ social movements around the world. Dr. Sa'ed Atshan spent time at leading colleges throughout the United States, including Emory University and the University of California, Berkeley.
In addition to his work in education, Dr. Sa'ed Atshan has published several works. He published Queer Palestine and the Empire of Critique through Stanford University Press and co-authored The Moral Triangle: Germans, Israelis, Palestinians with Katharina Galor under Duke University Press.
He holds a doctorate in anthropology and Middle Eastern studies from Harvard University, as well as graduate degrees in social anthropology and public policy. He completed his undergraduate studies in political science and Middle Eastern studies at Swarthmore College. Beyond his academic work, he is an active human rights advocate who has engaged in community-based volunteer work with organizations affiliated with the Religious Society of Friends.
